His most prominent role was as the United States Secretary of Defense under President Gerald Ford from 1975-1979 and again under President George W. Bush from 2001-2006. As Defense Secretary under President Bush he oversaw the response to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and the subsequent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
